Risk Assessment (Gefährdungsbeurteilung) is the systematic identification and evaluation of all hazards to which employees are exposed at work. It is the central obligation of the employer according to §5 ArbSchG.

Risk assessment must cover all types of hazards:
Physical hazards:
- Mechanical hazards (machines, tools)
- Electrical hazards
- Hazardous substances
- Biological agents
- Fire and explosion hazards
Psychological hazards (explicitly since 2013):
- Work content/task
- Work organization
- Social relationships
- Work environment
