Burnout in Germany: 186.0 sick days per 1,000 AOK members (WIdO 2024)

186.0 sick days per 1,000 AOK members: the burnout burden has nearly doubled since 2015.

WIdO reports burnout absence on a population basis: 186.0 sick days per 1,000 AOK members fell to diagnosis group Z73 in 2024, up from 101.6 in 2015 (Fehlzeiten-Report 2025). For 2023 the Fehlzeiten-Report 2024 gives 174.8 days per 1,000 AOK members, up from 100.0 in 2014. This is an annual rate across a population, not the duration of a single case. Duration per burnout case is reported by occupational group and ranged from 18.6 to 43.9 days in 2023.

Two figures that are frequently confused

Burnout statistics use two different reference units. Both are correct but describe different things. Only together do they give the full picture.

Placing it in the trend

Burnout absence has risen sharply since 2014. Burnout is not a stand-alone mental diagnosis: it is coded as supplementary information in diagnosis group Z73 and therefore does not appear in figures for diagnosis group F00 to F99. More figures in sick days from mental illness.

Method

  • Population rate: sick days per 1,000 AOK members, diagnosis group ICD-10 Z73 (WIdO Fehlzeiten-Report 2024 and 2025)
  • Duration per case: sick days per burnout case by occupational group (WIdO Fehlzeiten-Report 2024, fig. 21.56, data year 2023)
  • Data years: the Fehlzeiten-Report 2024 covers 2023, the Fehlzeiten-Report 2025 covers 2024
  • Values as published, without further conversion
