AOK reports burnout absences on a population basis: around 184 sick days per 100 employed members in 2024, up from 100 in 2014 (+84 %). The average duration of a single sick-leave episode is around 28 to 40 days; severe burnout courses, however, can last several months, up to roughly half a year (about 184 days).

Two metrics that are often confused
Burnout statistics use two different reference units. Both are correct, but they describe different things, and only together do they give a complete picture.
Trend context
Burnout-related absences have risen sharply since 2014 and are among the longest of all mental illnesses. The leading mental diagnoses at work are burnout (Z73), depression (F32/F33) and anxiety disorders (F40/F41). More figures in the article Sick days from mental illness.

- Population rate: sick days per 100 employed AOK members, burnout diagnosis ICD-10 Z73 (AOK/WIdO Fehlzeiten-Report 2024)
- Case duration: average duration of a single burnout sick leave (WIdO 2024)
- Severe course: clinically documented upper bound of pronounced cases, several months up to about half a year
